The Politics of the Portrait - Art History: Hierarchies of Representation
The Politics of the Portrait

Bridget R. Cooks, Zirwat Chowdhury, and Edward Town consider potential approaches, revisions, and additions to prevailing frameworks for telling the history of portraiture and Black figuration. What are possibilities of restructuring European-centric art history as a more decentralized, inclusive discipline? What scholarly initiatives are most effective at countering systemic marginalization in the representation of Black and Brown bodies in Western art? How can that which is absent - materially, historically, visually - be represented in these narratives? Notwithstanding absences within the archive, what work is being done to center the lives of the Black figures in these portraits? What can we learn from close looking and study within a museum context? This program will be moderated by Maryam Ohadi-Hamadani, Postdoctoral Research Associate, Yale Center for British Art
