Katy Moran
artist
Born in Manchester in 1975, Moran is a contemporary artist known for her powerful and evocative abstract paintings. Her work explores color, composition, and gesture and sometimes suggests landscape, portraiture, or still life. Her ideas emerge from the process of painting. She often shifts or rotates the canvas while painting, reworks textures, and reconsiders the shapes and figures that appear, looking at the painting from different angles until every part of it works. Sometimes Moran identifies the subject of a painting in its title; other works have titles that are autobiographical or seemingly arbitrary. Her work has been the subject of numerous solo and group exhibitions. Her painting "Black Bear" (2008) is in the collection of the Yale Center for British Art. Moran lives and works in Hertfordshire.
